Donor Nephrectomy

Donor Nephrectomy

There are generally two ways to remove a person’s kidney for the purposes of transplantation (donor nephrectomy): open or minimally invasive (MIS).  The “open” method refers to the traditional incision in the flank or side of the body, just over the lower ribcage.  The MIS method refers to laparoscopic / robotic / NOTES / etc in which small ports are placed through small 1cm incisions in the abdomen through which the operation is conducted and a small 12cm extraction incision is made when the kidney is ready to be removed.
